Thesis Statement
The Iran and Iraq war in 1979-1987 brought horrible experience to children in that time. As a person with Iranian background, I decided to design a place (War memorial) where people can experience war. Based on this decision, I designed the areas including either war or peace atmosphere. Through the journey of these areas and comparing the binary of war and peace, one would ask himself if human beings truly know their desire and state.
The war memorial place is built among the predesigned landscape in coronation park, lake shore Blv, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. There is an entrance gate in the beginning of the park that is allocated between two landscapes. This gate is for visitors to get ticket and some information about the war memorial. After that, people should walk through designed pathway that leads them to the memorial. At the beginning, visitors enter to the dark and tight tunnel that its wall shape is angular and sharp. The walls are so close together and give people the impression of pressure, and frustration. The place is so dark which is illuminated only by thin lines of light that come through different small holes in the ceiling. After moving onward the enduring tunnel, people arrive in the area that is like a volcano which symbolizes the brutality of the war. The place is wet and cold and its walls are made by metal, which transfer hopeless and abundant feelings to visitors. The next area is a long narrow hall with lighting outlets in the ceiling. The light is the symbol of people's wish to the end of the war. The lighting outlets gradually increase and create horizontal view of lakeshore in the end of the hall. After passing the area visitors encounter an open space, which is encompassed with circular shapes. In the center of this open area there is an apple tree, which represents unity through which people achieve peace. As people move towards the next space, they find themselves in a gallery with lots of lighting outlets in the ceiling in order to create spiritual mood. In this gallery there are sculptures regards to humanity concepts. After exiting the gallery, visitors come upon to an artificial waterfall, which is surrounded by glass walls. Therefore, people can enjoy the view of water while looking at the nature behind the glass walls. Across the waterfall, a bar is located for social gathering and communication. In the corner of the area, there is a ramp which leads people to second floor of the existing building in which is a library. The library is surrounded by a balcony by standing on which visitors can get a view of all the areas they have visited. In the corner of the library there is an elevator that takes down people to the first floor. In front of the elevator in the first floor, there is a conference room, which is usually for seminars about war and its consequences. Beside the conference room, there is a hallway that guides people to the exit door of the memorial.
